BMW N47 Engine

BMW and MINI use Timing Chains in most engines that they produce. A large number of engines are actually affected by an unpleasant rattling & grinding noise made by the chain stretching, the guides failing, disintegrating, or worse, total chain failure.

The most common is the N47 4 cylinder 2.0 diesel engine which is fitted to most 2.0 diesel engines from 2007-2014, in 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 series, and with x1 and x3.

At Traction we commonly see the N47 and have come very familiar with replacing or repairing when catastrophic damage occurs, get in touch today to see how we can help.

Snapped Chain...

Each timing chain failure varies based on the engine's position in the combustion stroke at the moment of failure. In the best-case scenario, the impact of the valves hitting the pistons may not result in them bending. Typically, the camshaft carrier cracks, rocker arms break, and the pistons may only have minor markings. In this case, all the timing chain components, including gears and tensioners, will need to be replaced, with repair costs usually around £1700.

In the worst-case scenario, all 16 valves could be bent, resulting in extensive damage to the camshafts, pistons, connecting rods, and crankshaft. There may also be metallic contamination throughout the engine oil circuit. In such cases, the most cost-effective solution may be a complete engine replacement. Repair costs can range from £2500 to £5000 all depending on damage, we won't know till we crack open your engine.

For 8 out of 10 jobs, the typical cost to repair a snapped timing chain on an N47 engine falls between £1200 to £2200, all depending on damage.
